Why Being a Good Programmer Does Not Always Mean Earning More

Why do some programmers advance more than others?

I have seen technically brilliant programmers stagnant, while others with "normal" skills scale positions and lead teams. The difference is not only in the code. It is in soft skills.

Being a good programmer is important, but it is not enough to grow professionally. Networking, effective communication and leadership skills play a crucial role in your career.

How to improve your earning potential

Some of the things that I am going to mention below may even have stopped applying them at some point in the last 2 years, but they are things that have worked for me in the past and that I see are still valid, since I have never seen people who apply them and do not work for them.

Tip 1: Don't marry a company

If you are at the beginning of your career, it is tempting to hold on to your first job and think that it is the place where you will grow professionally. However, if you are starting, changing companies every 1-2 years can be an effective strategy to increase your salary until you reach a competitive income and that you consider fair for your level of experience.

Personally, I changed my company every 8 months - 1 year, and in each change I not only evaluated salary, but also benefits, work environment, growth opportunities, among other factors.

Tip 2: Money is not everything

Just as it came in the previous tip, money is not everything, and sometimes it is better to sacrifice a little salary for a better work environment, better benefits or a better business culture.

In fact, if you are in a toxic company, the negative impact on your mental and physical health can be much worse than any salary increase you can get. That is, if you work in a place where you do not feel valued, where stress is constant and where there are no growth opportunities, your overall well-being is likely to be negatively affected.

Even your salary can be something unexpected since if you work up to 14-16 hours a day, and then divide your salary between those hours, you may end up earning less than someone who works 8 hours a day in a healthy environment, but who at first glance earns less.

For example, if you earn $ 30,000 MXN per month working approximately 16 hours a day ($1000 daily / 16 hours ▁hora $18.75 MXN per hour), and someone who earns $ 25,000 MXN per month working 8 hours a day ($833 daily / 8 hours MX $104.16 MXN per hour), the difference is abysmal, emphasizing again that the one who earns less at a glance, actually earns more per hour worked and also has a better quality of life since he can dedicate time to other activities outside work.

NOTE: So yes, sometimes "earn less" is "earn more", which is why I include this tip.

Tip 3: Improve your soft skills and techniques

Constant learning is a very useful tool, in fact, it is one of the most valued skills, not only in the technology industry, but in any professional field.

And yes, there are many ways to grow professionally, either taking the Leadership (or Management) side, planning and having personnel in your charge, or taking the technical side, specializing in some technology or specific area (DevOps, Security, Infrastructure, etc.).

In this case, whatever your interest in the long term, I recommend you master both branches, as it will open many doors in the future. Yes, if you want to be a Senior DevOps Engineer, it is important that you have solid technical skills in that area and in fact, it should be your main focus, but it is also important that you develop soft skills such as effective communication, teamwork and time management.

Just like if you want to be an Engineering Manager, it is crucial that you have leadership and team management skills, but it is also important that you keep your technical skills updated in order to understand and support your team effectively.

Final thoughts

Being a good programmer is important, but it is not the only factor that determines how much money you can earn. Luck, networking, soft skills and the ability to adapt to different work environments also play a crucial role in your professional and financial success.

Always look after your well-being, look for a balance between work and personal life, and never stop learning and growing as a professional.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some programmers earn more without being technically better? Because the salary depends on more than the code: negotiation, visibility, networking and, above all, soft skills. Those who know how to communicate its value charge more than those who only have it.

How do I increase my salary as a developer? It combines technical excellence with visibility and chooses well where you work. My guide to stand out in tech 2026 and this analysis on the companies that pay the best help you.

So is it not worth being a good programmer? Of course it is: it is the basis. But it is the starting point, not the arrival. The technique keeps you in the game; the rest of skills is what drives your income.
