How to Compress JPG and WebP Images for Free Without Uploading Photos
A photo can look good and still be awkward to share because its file is too large. Compressing an image means balancing detail, dimensions and file size, rather than lowering quality until the problem disappears.
Antrapost’s free image compressor lets you compare the original with a JPG or WebP output and see its actual file size. Antrapost is one of my projects; this tool works without registration.
File size, dimensions and quality are different
Dimensions describe how many pixels an image contains. File size describes the bytes occupied by the file. Encoding quality controls how some of that information is represented in formats such as JPG and WebP.
A photo can keep its dimensions while taking less space after re-encoding. You can also reduce its dimensions when the original resolution is unnecessary. Neither choice alone guarantees an acceptable visual result.
| Setting | What changes | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Quality | Encoding and retained detail | Edges, textures and small text |
| Dimensions | Number of pixels | Enough resolution for the destination |
| Format | How the image is stored | Compatibility and transparency |
How to compress a photo step by step
- Open the compressor and choose your image.
- Check its original size and dimensions.
- Choose JPG or WebP as the output.
- Adjust quality and compare both previews.
- If you have excess resolution, set a maximum size for the longest edge.
- Check the output size and download only when you are satisfied.
The editor can preserve the original dimensions or limit the longest edge to 2048, 1600, 1080 or 720 pixels. It maintains the aspect ratio and does not enlarge a photo already smaller than the selected limit.
One starting point is to keep the dimensions and try a moderate quality setting. Change one variable at a time afterward. You will know whether visible degradation comes from compression or excessive downscaling.
Compare without being misled by the preview
Inspect an area with fine detail: hair, vegetation, text or interface lines. Then view the image at its intended display size. Something acceptable as a thumbnail might fail as an enlarged product photograph.
For an application screenshot, pay particular attention to letters. A photograph tolerates changes that a code block may not. If text becomes hard to distinguish, increase quality, change formats or use a screenshot focused more closely on the relevant content.
To adjust framing first, use the image resizer. Compressing an entire desktop will not fix an application that appears too small within it.
Why a compressed image can be larger
Re-encoding does not always save space. The original might already be optimized or use different parameters. The tool displays the actual size and warns when the output is not smaller.
If that happens, keep the original or try lower quality and smaller dimensions. Avoid downloading automatically just because a button says “compress.” The result is the file you get, not the intention behind the process.
There is no guaranteed saving percentage either: it depends on the file, its content and your settings. Compare your own results rather than expecting a fixed reduction.
Transparency and animated files
WebP can preserve transparency. JPG cannot: this compressor places transparent areas on a white background. That matters if you are preparing a logo for a dark background.
The tool does not support animated images. To choose formats or change the color that replaces transparency when converting to JPG, see the image conversion guide.
Frequently asked questions
Does compression mean no quality loss?
No. This editor’s JPG and WebP compression can lose detail. Comparing the previews helps you choose what is acceptable for the image’s specific use.
Are my photos sent to a server?
Processing happens in the browser. The tool does not save your photos; download the result before leaving.
Does WebP always work for social media posts?
Do not assume universal compatibility. Check the destination’s editor and requirements. If another format is needed, convert the file and inspect the result again.
Reduce file size with a visible decision
Try Antrapost’s compressor with a real photo and record your settings. Keep the version that meets your size needs while still clearly showing what you want to communicate.
