How to Convert PNG, JPG and WebP: Formats, Backgrounds and Transparency

Someone asks for a JPG image, but you have a PNG. Changing the filename seems easy, yet renaming an extension does not convert an image. Its contents need to be saved in the correct format.

Antrapost’s free image converter converts between JPG, PNG and WebP in your browser. Antrapost is one of my projects; you can use the converter without an account. This guide helps you choose an output and understand what happens to transparency.

Which format should you choose?

No format wins in every situation. Choose according to the content and destination, then compare the resulting file.

FormatTransparencyOne reason to choose it
JPGNoPhotos needing an opaque output supported by the destination
PNGYesGraphics, screenshots or images where transparency matters
WebPYesAn output that may balance size and quality when supported

PNG does not automatically mean “better photo,” and WebP does not automatically mean “smaller file.” Quality, dimensions and content also influence the result.

Convert PNG to JPG without surprises

  1. Open the converter and select the original PNG.
  2. Under Convert to, choose JPG.
  3. Choose the background for transparent areas.
  4. Adjust quality and inspect the preview.
  5. Check the output size and download the JPG.
  6. Open it against the background where you intend to use it.

A transparent logo needs particular attention: after conversion to JPG, its empty areas can no longer show the page background. Your chosen color becomes part of the file.

If the logo needs to work on both light and dark backgrounds, keeping it as PNG or WebP may be preferable. If a system only accepts JPG, prepare an opaque version that actually looks good in that context.

Converting JPG to PNG does not remove a background

This is a common misunderstanding: JPG has no transparency, and saving it as PNG does not decide which pixels to remove. You get a PNG containing the photograph, including its background.

Background removal requires another process. The converter preserves transparency when it already exists and the output format supports it; it does not automatically cut out people, products or logos.

Imagine a photograph of a shoe on a white table. Converting it to PNG keeps the white table. An image of the shoe with a transparent background needs that background removed beforehand.

Conversion is not cropping or targeted compression

The converter preserves original dimensions within its processing limits. For another crop or size, use the image resizer.

The result may be larger or smaller than the original. If your priority is reducing bytes with a before-and-after comparison, the compressor is designed for that workflow.

Do not chain tools unnecessarily. First decide whether the problem is format, file size, dimensions or content. Keep an original copy so you do not repeatedly recompress an output that has already lost detail.

What to check before sharing the file

Inspect the actual extension of the download, its dimensions, edges and transparent areas. A checkerboard in the preview indicates transparency: it is not a pattern you need to remove from your design.

The output is a static image. The tool does not support animated files and may lose original metadata. If you need particular file information preserved, do not assume a visual conversion will retain it.

Images are processed locally in your browser and are not saved for another visit. Save the result before closing the page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a PNG to JPG for free?

Yes. Select the file, choose JPG, adjust the background and download. This tool requires no registration.

What if my destination does not accept WebP?

Convert to a format it supports and inspect the result. A file opening in your browser does not mean every social media editor or application will accept it.

Should I convert everything to PNG to improve quality?

No. PNG does not recover information a JPG image has already lost. Choose according to the use rather than expecting an automatic improvement.

Choose the output according to what you need to retain

Open Antrapost’s converter and experiment with a small image. Understanding its background, file size and dimensions avoids surprises when you work with an important file.
