How to Create Free Social Media Covers People Can Read
A cover can have a good photograph and still explain nothing. If its title disappears against the background or promises something the content does not deliver, more effects will not fix it. A useful cover makes the topic recognizable and the message readable at a small size.
You can create one with Antrapost’s free cover maker, one of my projects. Combine a title, secondary text, colors and an optional photo or logo. No registration is needed to download.
Decide what it should say before designing
The title should name a concrete idea. “Important update” does not explain what changed; “My app now exports your expenses” does. This is a writing example: use a promise your project actually fulfills.
Secondary text can explain who it helps or what readers will find when opening the post. Remove it if it merely repeats the title. A signature identifies the brand without needing to compete with the main message.
| Element | Its job | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Identify the topic | Vague or excessively long wording |
| Secondary text | Add necessary context | Repeating the entire title |
| Photo | Show the subject or support the idea | A background that prevents reading |
| Logo or signature | Identify the author or brand | Becoming the largest element without a reason |
Create a cover with Antrapost
- Choose square, portrait or story format.
- Write a short title and inspect the preview.
- Add secondary text only when it contributes something.
- Position the text at the top, middle or bottom.
- Use a background color or select a photo from your device.
- Adjust framing and darkening when using a photo.
- Add an optional logo or signature and download the cover as PNG.
The editor’s formats are 1080 × 1080, 1080 × 1350 and 1080 × 1920. Then check how previews are cropped on your destination platform. A complete design may need a different composition for another aspect ratio.
Contrast: inspect the area behind the text
Photographs contain bright and dark areas. White text on a white shirt can disappear even when the rest of the photograph is dark.
The photo-darkening control helps separate the message from the background. Use enough to make the title readable without turning the image into a dark blur. You can also change the crop, move the text or choose a photograph with less detail behind the title.
For solid backgrounds, the editor warns about low text contrast. That assistance does not replace inspecting the image at a small size: test the cover at phone size before calling it finished.
An example for announcing a demo
For a portfolio application, choose a recognizable action in the screenshot: recording an expense, filtering results or viewing a summary. Avoid placing the whole interface behind a long title.
You can separate the cover from the technical detail. The first image introduces the problem, and another slide explains your solution. The carousel guide helps organize that explanation without overloading the cover.
Do not add performance, user or savings figures you have not measured. A specific, demonstrable title is more useful than a huge claim without evidence.
Photos and logos are optional
You can work with color and text alone. If adding a logo, the editor accepts JPG, PNG or WebP. Existing transparency usually helps it blend with the background, but the tool does not remove backgrounds.
If you need another logo format, see what happens when converting PNG, JPG and WebP. Changing an extension does not make an opaque image transparent.
The cover is generated in your browser and has no Antrapost watermark. Drafts are not retained when leaving; save the download and original wording if you want to edit it later.
Frequently asked questions
Can I create a cover without paying or using a photo?
Yes. Use a background color, add your text and download the PNG. A photograph and logo are optional.
Why does my title not fit?
Space is limited. Shorten the title or secondary text rather than putting an entire explanation onto one cover.
Does the same image work on every network?
Do not assume so. Check the destination’s format, framing and previews, especially when moving between square, portrait and story formats.
Design for understanding
Open Antrapost’s cover maker and prepare two titles for the same content. Keep the one that makes the post understandable without an additional explanation.
